Chiropractic adjustment is a controlled movement applied to a joint that’s no longer moving the way it should. Adjusting spines has been a specialty of Dr. Tony Nicholas since 2006, our chiropractor here at Axis Health and Wellness in Centennial.
This procedure is often recommended to people who waited too long to find a way to relieve their back pain. They thought that stretching or buying a new pillow could do the trick. But when a vertebra is out of position, the joints around it tighten. The nerves that pass through that area get irritated, causing pain that won’t settle on its own.
Before recommending this non-surgical procedure, Dr. Tony will first examine you and take X-rays. He also works around your pain level before adjusting anything. The initial cost is $29, including the examination and the adjustment.
What Chiropractic Adjustment Does?
Chiropractic adjustment restores your range of motion to that spine segment. Your spine is a structure of joints, and your nervous system runs down the middle of it. When a segment drifts out of alignment, the joint can get stiff and irritated, and the nerve roots can get crowded.
This problem can be restored through an adjustment that removes the pressure from the nerve. The muscles that surround that area will let go. In that way, the body can start doing what it’s designed to do.
Dr. Tony believes that the body has a natural ability to heal itself if you simply provide it with the right way to grow and repair. His approach doesn’t involve drugs and surgery.
- Restores range of motion to stiff joints
- Removes pressure off irritated nerve roots, where radiating pain and tingling start
- No drugs and surgery
- The therapy is built toward structural change through chiropractic biophysics that Dr. Tony continues to practice.
Do No Harm Philosophy Comes First
Dr. Tony’s main treatment philosophy is “do no harm to the patient.” He knows that when you walk into his office, he knows that you’re already in pain. Instead of causing more pain, he finds out where your pain level is before he does the adjusting. He also works within it.
“You do not want to cause more pain than they are already in. If the end result is getting them out of pain, some discomfort is fine along the way. But if I hurt somebody on the first visit, they are reluctant to come back, and then I cannot help them at all.”
Dr. Tony Nicholas, D.C.This philosophy is also the reason new patients don’t undergo chiropractic adjustment on day one of their visit. If the initial examination says that your body is not ready for any adjusting, he’ll recommend that you wait.
What Chiropractic Adjustments are For
Chiropractic adjustments are designed for patients with low back pain, neck pain, and sciatic problems. But the adjustments are also a part of the plan in the following conditions:
Headaches, Vertigo and Chiropractic Adjustments
When patients come in for headaches, they are surprised that their pain is a cervicogenic headache. Around 90 percent of headaches and migraines start in the upper neck. They radiate around the head or settle behind an eye. This type of headache is the result of cervical spine misalignments that press on nerves going to the head and neck. This is the reason a lot of people describe the pain as having a tension band around the skull. A chiropractic adjustment can correct the misalignment.
Vertigo is another common complaint that many patients are surprised to know that this condition can be alleviated with simple chiropractic maneuvers in our Centennial Office. When you feel like the room spins, it’s usually an inner ear issue where the crystals have shifted, causing you to feel like the room is spinning.
Why Chiropractic Adjustments Require X-Rays First
Chiropractic adjustment will only become a part of your treatment if your X-rays show you can be treated by adjusting your spine. Dr. Tony doesn’t recommend it just by guessing. He will only include it after examining the images and understanding what is going on internally.
This method also gives us a baseline. If you need a structural correction instead of relieving your symptom, you need a starting picture to measure against.
What Chiropractic Adjustments Are Like From Start to Finish
- Dr. Tony will look into your past medical history to have in-depth details of what is really bothering you.
- While in the examination room, the chiropractor listens to every concern that you have.
- You will undergo a thorough examination and X-rays. This is usually the order if you complain of back and neck pain.
- Once Dr. Tony determines the right plan for you after a thorough examination, you can decide whether or not to push through with the treatment. He will explain every step of the procedure.
- You also get a quick tour of the office if you wish to know what you are walking into.
How Often Will You Need Adjusting
The number of visits will depend on your condition and how long it has been affecting you. If it has been there for years, it can take longer to fix than when you just had it last week.
Eliminating the Pain
If it’s an acute back or structural problem, Dr. Tony may recommend two to three times a week. The goal in this timeline is to relieve the pain that brought you in our office.
Staying Out of Pain
After relieving your pain, the number of visits drops to one to two times a week if you want the structural problem to be corrected completely. You will decide whether you wish to be out of pain or completely healed.
Dr. Tony will also factor in your age and general health. Your number of visits is different from that of patients who are younger than you. The chiropractor will also take into account your weight, diet, and overall health.
Chiropractic Adjustments Will Not Involve 60 Visits
Dr. Tony will plan your number of visits after taking a thorough examination of your structural problem through X-rays. The recommended number of visits on the first day can change after re-evaluation. Your options are provided from the most conservative to the most intensive.
If the therapy is not working, Dr. Tony will tell you so. For instance, if you’ve already had 12 visits but your condition is not improving, Dr. Tony will stop the treatment and refer you out. This is also the same when you show up to our office with shortness of breath or balance problems, or if you’re in extreme pain. Dr. Tony will send you to the right provider immediately.

Chiropractic Adjustments FAQs
Does a chiropractic adjustment hurt?
Chiropractic adjustment should not hurt. Dr. Tony determines your pain level first before he starts the adjustment, and he works within it. Because his main philosophy is do no harm, he won’t cause you any more pain.
The adjustment may cause some soreness. It is normal and similar to how you feel after working out your muscles you haven’t used in a while. The soreness settles quickly.
What is the popping sound during an adjustment?
The popping sound during an adjustment is the gas being released from the joint as pressure changes. This is the same thing that happens when you crack a knuckle. It means that nothing is breaking and no bone is moving out of place. Most of all, it’s not a measurement of the adjustment’s success. Plenty of effective adjustments make no sound at all.
Once I start chiropractic care, do I have to go forever?
No. This is just a misconception that Dr. Tony wants to correct often. Many people assume that every patient requires a 60-visit plan. But here at our Centennial office, we don’t do that.
When you’re out of pain, you can decide whether to continue the treatment or not. Some people do choose to stop when the pain is gone. But others choose to continue because being out of pain doesn’t mean that they’re completely healed.
How many chiropractic visits will I need?
The number of chiropractic visits you need will depend on your condition. If your condition involves acute back and structural problems, you may need two to three visits a week to eliminate the pain. Then, the number will drop to one to two a week if you wish to correct your structural problems. How long the problem has been there is also a main factor. If it’s a chronic issue, it can take longer to fix.
You also have to factor in your age, weight, diet, and overall health. A teenager heals faster than someone in his/her 30s or 40s.
Do I need X-rays before being adjusted?
Yes. Dr. Tony needs your X-rays so he can get a complete picture of your structural issue. X-rays will help him understand what is going on internally, instead of simply guessing it. They reveal any alignment problems, degeneration, or old injuries. He may find something in the imaging that will not make you an ideal candidate for the adjustment. The images also give us a baseline to measure structural progress against.
Can chiropractic adjustments help my headaches?
Chiropractic adjustments may help your headaches. Around 90 percent of headaches and migraines start in the upper neck and radiate around the head or behind an eye. Those are cervicogenic headaches that come from misalignments in your cervical spine pressing on nerves that feed the head and neck. This is also the reason patients feel like there’s a tension band around their skull.
Chiropractic adjustment does work well with those conditions. However, if you have slurred speech, trouble hearing, dizziness, or faintness, you need to get medical attention first. Read more about it on our headaches and migraines page.
What happens if adjustments do not work for me?
If the original chiropractic adjustment plan is not showing results after 8 to 12 visits, Dr. Tony will stop the treatment and refer you out. He will also refer you to the emergency room if you have signs such as shortness of breath or balance problems. If you’re in too much pain, you should seek medical attention first.
In some cases, the answer is not chiropractic adjustment but another treatment like spinal decompression. If it’s a joint problem, it may go away through SoftWave therapy.
