The neck can have several issues, but when it becomes painful, the pain can radiate to many areas of the body. The nerves that control the hands pass through it, and many headaches are linked to this area. The muscles that tighten under stress may also be connected in the neck. So, when there’s a misalignment with the cervical spine, it’s not surprising that the symptoms can show up in various places. Some people may spend months treating their shoulder blade without knowing that the nerves in the neck may be contributing to the pain that they’re feeling.

Neck pain is one of the most common conditions that Dr. Tony Nicholas treats at Axis Health and Wellness in Centennial. Many of his patients might have already tried various medical treatments before they see him, but none has worked so far. Fortunately, he takes a different approach that follows a principle of examining the area with X-rays and treating the pain without the need for surgery.

The Many Ways a Neck Problem Can Show Up

A pinched nerve in the neck rarely keeps its symptoms in one place. Here are some of the other ways it can show up:

  • Muscle spasms in the upper trapezius area, like the shoulder
  • Radiating pain down the arms
  • Pain behind an eye or into the ear
  • Headaches wrapping around the skull
  • Numb or tingling hands
  • Shoulder pain that is actually referred

“Pinched nerves in the neck can cause spasms in the upper trap, along with pain that radiates down the arms and can spread into the upper traps, behind the eye, or into the ear.”

Dr. Tony Nicholas, D.C.

The doctor will look at the wide range of symptoms that may be connected to the pain and not just focus on the area that’s currently hurting. They might ask about the numbness in the hand that a patient might forget to mention, and it can be connected to neck pain because they’re the same problem showing up in different ways.

Where Neck Pain Comes From

  • Poor posture while working in front of a computer for hours.
  • Whiplash and auto accidents, including the ones from years ago that were never treated.
  • A herniated disc in the neck, which can cause pain to radiate down the arm.
  • Years of accumulated misalignment that eventually leaves the body with no more room to heal.

How a Neck Gets Evaluated Here

  • 1 Share the full picture.  It’s important to tell the doctor about any old accidents a patient may have experienced in the past, as well as various symptoms that they feel, including headaches. The full picture matters because many providers focus only on the first two symptoms you mention.
  • 2 A thorough exam. They will check the patient’s current range of motion and what caused the symptoms to determine the root cause of the issue.
  • 3 X-rays of the cervical spine. The findings can help identify the misalignments that may be pressing on nerves.
  • 4 A plan matched to your pain level. The do-no-harm rule guides this clinic: Care begins gently and is designed to avoid making you feel worse than you did before treatment.

How Neck Pain Gets Treated?

  • Chiropractic adjustments correct misalignments that may put pressure around the nerves, and it serves as the foundation of cervical care.
  • Dry needling, which Dr. Tony now uses mostly around the cervical area to release stubborn neck tension.
  • SoftWave therapy as upper cervical stimulation, which he has found especially helpful for some patients with headaches.
  • Posture and structural correction when the workstation is the real source of the problem.

How Long Does It Take?

Acute neck pain may typically start with sessions that can last from two to three weeks, and the goal is to get immediate relief. Depending on the results, the sessions may decrease, especially if there’s significant improvement. The length of the treatment will often depend on one’s age and overall health. Weekly evaluations are done, and there’s an 8- to 12-visit rule that applies. If there’s no progress seen, then it’s time to refer the patient to a specialist.

Get Medical Care First If

  • The neck pain follows a recent trauma where a fracture needs to be ruled out.
  • It comes with neurological symptoms such as numbness spreading into the face.
  • There was a head injury accompanied by loss of consciousness and other symptoms.

If there’s an aching nerve in the neck that doesn’t meet these emergency conditions, but they still affect your daily life, then go to a clinic nearby for help.

How Much Does a Checkup Cost?

A thorough examination can start at $29. We accept all insurance except Medicaid. Know that credit cards, HSA, FSA, CareCredit, and Cherry Cash can also be available. There are payment plans available, including no-interest options to make everything more affordable. Cost can be a major concern for many patients who want to treat their neck pain and fortunately, there are cost-effective options that they can choose from according to their needs.

Neck Pain FAQs

Why does my neck problem hurt in my arm?

The nerves that are connected to the arm exit through the cervical spine, and if there’s a misaligned vertebra, it puts pressure on them, and the pain may travel along the path. It can move down the arm and sometimes behind the eye.

That is why arm symptoms can still lead to a neck examination, even when the neck itself does not feel like the source of the problem.

Are neck adjustments safe?

Chiropractic care is a drug-free alternative, and it’s non-invasive as well. It can effectively alleviate many neck problems, and each adjustment starts with a proper examination. Dr. Tony will adjust his techniques based on one’s comfort level, and he is gentle.

A patient who gets hurt during the first visit is unlikely to return for a second, so he builds care with that in mind.

Could my headaches and neck pain be the same problem?

They’re very likely to be the same because, according to Dr. Tony’s experience, around 90% of the headaches may start in the upper neck and radiate around the head because of the misalignments that press on the nerves of the spine.

Treating the neck can therefore address the headache as well. If the two symptoms improve together, they may be connected, and the examination helps determine whether they are.

My neck has hurt for years. Is it too late?

No, but it’s reasonable to expect that the treatments can take longer because the problems may take longer to correct. Neck pain that has been around for five years might be unlikely to heal in just five visits.

Patients need weekly reevaluations, and if there are no improvements within the 8 to 12 visit mark, they’re going to be referred to a specialist to continue their treatment.

What does dry needling in the neck actually do?

Dry needling uses very thin needles that are placed in damaged tissues to create stimuli. This encourages blood flow and helps heal the area where the muscles are stiff. Dr. Tony uses dry needling for stubborn tension and pain relief.

It is used alongside adjustments rather than as a replacement for them: one treatment focuses on the muscle, while the other addresses the alignment underneath.

Can you fix the neck problems my desk job keeps causing?

Fixing the issue is only part of the process but keeping the pain from returning while spending more than six hours a day leaning towards a computer monitor can be challenging. This is why posture correction is part of the care. It’s important to address the root cause of the problem so the pain won’t return even if one constantly works in the office.

These plans combine adjustments with structural work that targets your posture, helping the correction hold up while you continue working.

My neck pain started after a car accident. Anything different?

Yes, there are two main differences. Accident-related neck problems receive extensive X-rays because excessive movement between the vertebrae can indicate ligament damage. Documenting everything is important, and this can also help with insurance or lawsuit cases if there are any.

The treatment itself follows the same approach used for every neck problem here: examine first and make sure to re-evaluate everything after a few weeks.

Stop Treating the Symptoms and Examine the Switchboard

If the headaches and the aching traps all point to the same source, which is the neck, it can take time if the symptoms are treated separately. It’s important to get the cervical spine examined to address the source directly. Axis Health and Wellness treats neck pain for Centennial, Greenwood Village, Lone Tree, Highlands Ranch, Littleton, Aurora, Parker, Castle Rock, and the south Denver metro.
