Neuropathy Treatment in Centennial, CO

Neuropathy treatment evaluation of the feet with Dr. Tony Nicholas at Axis Health and Wellness in Centennial CO

Neuropathy treatment is a three-part approach used by Dr. Tony Nicholas at Axis Health and Wellness. This is ideal if you feel burning in your feet that happens when you lie still. Your socks feel bunched up when they’re perfectly flat. Or your toes have gone quiet or feel a strange sensation of walking on carpet that’s not actually there.

You also have balance problems. Then, your doctor tells you that your condition is progressive and you’re given a prescription that you need to take for the rest of your life.

Most of the people who come and see Dr. Tony arrive at our clinic with these complaints. They’ve tried everything and are hoping that neuropathy treatment is the answer. Dr. Tony will tell you honestly at the start about what he thinks is realistic for your condition.

What Neuropathy Actually Is

Neuropathy is a progressive condition that affects the nerves. They are damaged, and they start dying. This is a plain description of this disease.

Progressive means that it’s moving in a certain direction. If you leave it untreated, it won’t stay as it is. For that reason, the goal of care in this condition is to change the direction. This is why starting care sooner matters more with this condition than with most.

One of the main causes of neuropathy is diabetes. That’s why nutrition carries a lot of weight in the plan.

Make Sure It’s Neuropathy

The first step of treatment is knowing it’s actually neuropathy and it’s not something else. When you have numbness and tingling, the location is the first clue to know where the problem resides.

Numbness and Tingling in the Feet

It could be neuropathy. But it could also be coming from your low back, as nerves that go through your legs and feet originate in the low back. When you have a compressed nerve root in that area, it produces symptoms in the feet. It could also be caused by an entrapment syndrome in the lower leg. These three issues are different, but they have a similar set of symptoms.

Numbness and Tingling in the Hands

When you have numbness and tingling in your hands, we check your neck. The nerves that go through your hands come out of your cervical spine. Hand symptoms start north of where you feel them. Please see our numbness and tingling and neck pain pages.

Numbness in the Face

You should get immediate medical attention as this can be a sign of a stroke. It’s not a chiropractic issue.

If your foot symptoms come from a compressed disc in your low back, it’s a different problem with different treatment. Spinal decompression may be the answer to it, and not neuropathy approach. This is the reason a thorough examination matters a lot, as it helps Dr. Tony sort everything out.

The Three Part Approach

Neuropathy doesn’t respond to just one treatment. It requires several things that must be done consistently. Each must address a certain part of the problem.

  • Electrical stimulation. Damaged nerves stop carrying signals the way they should. Stimulating them will retrain these nerves to fire correctly.
  • Infrared and red light therapy. It increases blood flow to the area so nutrients can reach the nerves and give them what they need to regenerate. Circulation is the delivery system used by the body for proper nutrient distribution. Nothing arrives without it.
  • Nutrition. Giving your nerves proper nutrients is not an option. Blood flow without raw material to deliver won’t rebuild anything.

SoftWave Alongside It

SoftWave therapy is also used to stimulate healing in the affected area by sending acoustic waves into the tissue to improve blood flow. It also switches the body’s repair response back on. This is useful in an area where the response has gone quiet.

Ninety Percent of This Happens at Your House

This is why we’re different from other clinics that offer neuropathy care. You must know it before you call us.

Most of the neuropathy treatment is done at home. We perform SoftWave in the office and muscle stimulation sometimes. But 90 percent of the work is yours to do on your own.

“Consistency is key with neuropathy. Doing as much as you possibly can at home really shows the great results in the long run.”

Dr. Tony Nicholas, D.C.

Some people are relieved upon hearing it because it means that they have to make fewer visits that fit their lifestyle. Others think that it’s not for them. Knowing this information on day one is useful, instead of having the treatment and stopping in the middle. Nerve tissue responds well to repeated, steady input over time. Two visits per week without anything in between won’t get your nerves firing up again. We’d say it frankly rather than take your money.

What We Will and Will Not Tell You

Many clinics carry out aggressive marketing about neuropathy. You may be sold up front on an expensive package, dramatic promises, and urgency. If you’ve been searching for it for a while, you’ve already seen it.

Neuropathy is progressive. We won’t promise you a cure or tell you the nerve damage will be repaired or erased. The treatment we offer here aims at changing the direction of the disease. That is, supporting the nerves with circulation and better raw material. It also aims to improve how you function each day. The improvement depends on how long the damage has been going on, what’s causing it, and how consistent you are in the treatment.

The same rule applies in every treatment that we offer here. If care isn’t giving you the results after the 8th or 12th visit, Dr. Tony will refer you out instead of telling you to continue your treatment. He won’t sell you a 60-visit package here.

Keep Your Medical Team Involved

Chiropractic care for neuropathy must be done along with medical care. It’s not an alternative treatment. It means that you must get medical attention right away if:

  • Numbness appears in your face. You might have a stroke, and it must be ruled out first.
  • You have a sore, blister, or wound on your foot that’s not healing. This is an urgent matter because reduced sensation means it’s caused by untreated injuries.
  • Symptoms came on suddenly, or you have new weakness, instead of only numbness.
  • You lose bowel or bladder control.

If the main cause of your neuropathy is diabetes, your blood sugar management stays with your medical doctor handling it. Don’t change or stop taking a prescription just because you’re undergoing treatment here. Tell Dr. Tony what your diabetes plan is, and he’ll build your care around it.

What It Costs

Most of our new patients are concerned about the overall cost of this treatment. Thus, we lay out the table early.

Your options range from the most conservative to the most involved. Pick one that suits you best. We take all insurance except Medicaid. We also accept HSA and FSA cards, CareCredit, Cherry, cash, and credit cards. Payment plans are also available. You can choose from options with no interest that you can pay over up to two years. Dr. Tony doesn’t want to reject people because of money. See our payment plan page here. Or you can start with the $29 new patient exam to know the cause of your symptoms first.

Neuropathy Treatment FAQs

What causes neuropathy?

The most common cause of neuropathy is diabetes. It’s also the most common reason the plan is built around it. That’s why nutrition is not offered as an extra but as part of the approach.

There are other causes of this condition. The point of the proper exam is to establish what’s driving your symptoms before Dr. Tony starts treating them.

Can neuropathy be reversed?

Neuropathy is a progressive disease. When the nerves are damaged and slowly dying, we can’t promise a cure or tell you that the damage can be erased. Anyone who promises you that must worry you.

The care aims to change the direction of the disease. That is, better circulation to the area, better raw materials to be delivered for repair, and retraining the nerves to fire properly. The improvement will depend on how long this condition has been ongoing, what’s causing it, and how consistent you are with the treatment at home.

Is my numbness neuropathy or a pinched nerve in my back?

The best way to answer it is through a proper examination. Numbness and tingling in the feet can be neuropathy, or it can also be coming from your low back. Nerves that serve your legs and feet originate there. Or the numbness can also be an entrapment syndrome in your lower leg.

Symptoms in the hand send us to the neck since those nerves come out of the cervical spine. This must be determined properly because it changes your treatment plan.

What does neuropathy treatment involve at your office?

There are three parts involved. Electrical stimulation to retrain the nerves to fire correctly. The infrared or red therapy increases blood flow so proper nutrients reach the nerves. Finally, a nutrition plan to supply what your nerves require to repair. SoftWave therapy is often integrated to stimulate healing in the area.

Most of the treatment is performed by you at home. SoftWave and muscle stimulation are done in the office.

Do I really have to do neuropathy treatment at home every day?

Yes. Roughly 90 percent of neuropathy treatment happens at home. Consistency is what produces results over time. Nerve tissue responds well to repeated, steady input and not just occasional bursts.

You must be honest with yourself about it before you even start the treatment. If daily home treatment is something you can’t do, then this approach won’t work. Knowing it on day one will save you money.

How long before I notice a change?

Nerve improvements are slow, and they are measured in months of consistent work, instead of a handful of sessions. You should also consider how long this condition has been developing. It’s a huge factor in your plan.

Your progress will be re-evaluated as your care progresses. Dr. Tony will refer you out if your condition hasn’t improved after the 8th or 12th visit.

Do I have to stop my neuropathy medication?

No. You must not change or stop your prescription medication for neuropathy just by reading this page. It must be decided by your prescribing doctor. If your diabetes is causing your neuropathy, your diabetes management must stay with your doctor and not Dr. Tony.

Tell us what you’re taking so your plan will be designed around it. Your care means that it will go along with your medical treatment.

What if the neuropathy treatment doesn’t work for me?

Dr. Tony will tell you that neuropathy treatment isn’t producing results after your 8th or 12th visit. Dr. Tony will refer you out instead of booking you for more visits. This rule applies to every patient and every treatment in our office.

We don’t sell large packages here. It makes this conversation a lot easier.
